Mr. Rumsfeld was sworn in as the 21st Secretary of Defense of the United States on 20 January 2001. He resigned 18 December 2006, setting the record of the oldest person ever on that post at 74 years of age. Previously he was the 13th Secretary of Defense under President Gerald Ford from 20 November 1975 to 20 January 1977. Then, at 43, he was the youngest.
