Thomas More

* London, 7 February 1477 - † London, 6 July 1535

Sir Thomas More was one of the greatest humanist scholars and writers of the Northern Renaissance. In ‘Utopia’, his best known and most enduring work, he describes a fictional island, where the inhabitants are undivided by the desire for personal gain, where government is always righteous, and where religion is pluralistic and tolerant.

After having served the government in various influential positions for decades, during which time he gained a reputation as an honest and effective public servant, More was executed for his refusal to accept Henry VIII as the head of the Church of England; in 1935, he was canonized by Pope Pius XI.

Portrait of Thomas More around age 50 painted by Hans Holbein the Younger, 1527, tempera on wood, 74 × 59 cm, The Frick Collection.
