4umi Rudyard Kipling : If / Синові in Ukrainian

If— in Ukrainian

Синові

Translation by publicist and former political prisoner Yevhen Sverstiuk (Евгений Сверстюк, Sil'tse, Volhynia region, 1927), also available at ukrlib.com. The poet recites his work in 2008 at kbulkin.wordpress.com as mp3 (02:28, 2.28mb). In an interview in 1995 he said that If— was quite popular among dissidents in Soviet camps; it was like a credo of stoicism and sacrifice in their struggle against the totalitarian regime.
Music and video by one-man show Kyrylo Bulkin (Kiev, 1967) for Sverstiuk's 80th birthday. Originally written circa 1992 to accompany the version of Vasyl' Stus.

Синові

Translation by publicist and martyr for the free word Vasyl' Stus (Василь Стус, 1938-1985), also at angizij.livejournal.com, where it is preceded by a more literal non-rhyming version by Dmytro Dontsov (Дмитро Донцов).

Translation by Taras Malkovych (Тарас Малкович), 2006 or earlier, according to litclub.org.ua.
