Don Quijote de la Mancha
Written while Cervantes was imprisoned for unpaid debts, his novel about the mad knight has arguably changed the world of literature in more profound ways than any other writing.
The first translation was made in English by Shelton in 1612. Since then several attempts to capture the Spanish spirit in foreign tongues have been made, but few as accessible as the translation by John Ormsby (1829-1895) from 1885 available on this website.
